Boer goat

A lot of people around the world eat goat meat (about 75 percent, at last count). The meat is very lean and delicious. It is a versatile breed in terms of providing human with food and fiber.

Their meat is popular around the world and the Boer is a popular meat goat.

The Boer goat originated in the Easter Cape Province of South Africa in the early 1900s when farmer began selective breeding for a meat type using native goats breeds.

They came into United States from New Zealand though Canada and continue to grow in popularity. This due to USDA restricted the import of goats directly from Africa.

Boer goats are large, heavy animas that resemble Nubians because of their Roman noses and floppy ears. They’re white and reddish brown and many are horned.

Current breed standards are a white color with a red head and a white blaze. A few red patches are allowed and a pigmented skin is preferred.

Polled individuals will occur occasionally, probably result of the European dairy breeds used in the early development of the breed.

Boer goat have spread quickly the last 4 to 5 years ago, however since it was difficult to get breeding animals for South Africa, a few purebred Boer goats were mainly used for crossing with colored or whose Saanen goats. Crossbreeding may also develop goats better adapted to regional climatic conditions.

The offspring are then crossed again with Boer goats and keep repeating the crossing. Today, Boers of acceptable quality can be purchased at the same cost as other goat breeds.
