Tomato fruit production worldwide

The tomato plant was introduced in Europe during the fifteenth century by the Spanish, but tomato domestication as an edible vegetable started during the fourteenth century.

The tomato is the second most consumed vegetable on a per capita basis following the potato. Fresh tomato are available year around from both field and greenhouse production.

Processing tomato season in all regions is stretching more and more towards continuously ongoing production.

Worldwide field production of tomat0n fruit has been increasing, but at a slower pace, both in the United States as well as in other parts of the world.

The global production of tomatoes (fresh and processed) has increase about 300% in the last four decades. The annual worldwide production tomato in 2013 has been about 164 million tons with a total production area of about 4.7 million hectare.

The three leading producer are China, India, USA and Turkey. China accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s total production and cultivated area.

In the tropics, tomato production is severely constrained by disease and several insect and mite pests. The major pests include fruit borer, common armyworm, beet army worm, whitefly, leaf miner and spider mites.
