What is genomics?

The genetic information in plants is stored in three sub-cellular compartments namely nucleus, chloroplast and mitochondria.

The nuclear genome is much large and far more complex in both structure and function than the two organelle genomes.

Genomics or genome science, is the study of the structure, content and evolution of genomes, including the analysis of the expression and function of both gene and proteins.

Genome sciences make use of and are integrated by the related disciplines of bioinformatics and computational biology.

The contemporary revolutionary pace of innovation genomics, marker assisted breeding and biotechnology creates a background in which there is a lot of scope for improving existing crop varieties, and addressing some of the most pressing problems that farmers are coping with.

Genomics is mainly divided into three broad categories:
*Structural genomic deals with the three –dimensional structures of proteins on the basis of their amino acid sequence.
*Comparative genomic – mainly concerned with analysis and competition of genomes from different species in order to understand the evolution of species and to further determine the functions of genes and intergenic regions
*Functional genomics – most widely used genomics, deals with the development and application of experimental approaches to assess gen function by global transcript profiling, reverse genetics and map-based cloning.
