Apple tree should grow happily on any allotment. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions, they should ideally be given a sunny aspect with a well-drained loamy soil, but some cooking varieties will tolerate a certain amount of shade.
The drainage feature of the soil is more significant than the fertility of the soil. Apple trees can also be grown in containers but they will need to be watered almost every day during the summer.
Generally speaking, the very heavy and very light soils should be avoided. Poor soils of any kind are not good for apples, and trees should never be set out on land which too poor for other corps.
